Type IIR surgical masks, as well as FFP2, are ideal for use in public areas and socially distant environments. They feature ear loops and adjustable nosepieces to ensure a snug fit. These masks help stop the spread of saliva or respiratory secretions exhaled by the person wearing them, making them a great option to stop the spread of viruses and potentially harmful bacteria.
IIR masks:
Surgical masks are primarily for the protection of others than for self-protection and fall under medical device regulations. These masks have different layer materials and thicknesses to meet the Type IIR mask certification (EN 14683).
FFP2 masks:
FFP2 masks provide protection against solid and liquid harmful dusts, fumes and aerosols. They must capture at least 94% of airborne particles with a size of 0.6 μm. Total leakage must not exceed 11%.
In contrast to the Type llR certification with 98%, the FFP2 masks must have only 94% filtering efficiency. This is already the biggest difference. However, due to the tight fit, they are also suitable for self-protection and thus offer better protection overall than the IRR masks.
Certification of the mask type FPP2 is EN 149:2001+A1:2009.
